I found it interesting on the website how Letinsky described utopia as a reality due to the presence of non-utopia. I've heard this sort of thing before, as in if there were no pain, there would be no happiness because there would be no distinction. I feel she accomplishes this concept in this still life by presenting the absence of utopia to immediately trigger the notion of utopia in the viewer. Whats left over from happiness brings back those memories, and helps to distinguish the line between good times and bad, utopia and non-utopia.
The photograph is of a table that has remains of what looks like a birthday party. It makes me wonder what happened at the party? Why is there only one place set? Was it just one person there? Why would they do that? I really like the photograph because I want to know more about it and it brings up a lot of questions.

She also comments on her style and says that "you cant have utopia without it's loss. " Meaning that, you cant have a completely perfect place if you know where it is, essentially. She shows this in the photo because there is so little that it makes the viewer want to be in the perfect utopia.
This picture is very interesting because there is candy on the table in a bowl but most some of it is on the table. There is also a glass with some type of liquid in it. It is surprising because there is a table cloth on the table. Usually table cloths are put on tables to keep it clean but obviously this photographer does not care about this, also it shows because the table cloth is wrinkly as well. Also Letinksy's thought on "utopia" is very interesting. -Austin
The picture is a table with white lace covering, it looks too small to be a dining table so it is probably a serving table. It has the remains of an ice cream desert someone was eating with stains on the white lace, candy, spoons and wrappers of the candy. The picture has natural lighting from what looks like a window and has a light green or white background. The photograph makes me think of the person who owns it, what happened to make that mess and why it happened. -Robert
The image of the table and empty glass lets you know there must of been a party there. The stain on the table show that whoever was there was messy.Aslo it makes you wonder who was there, what was the ocassion, and why didn't they clean it up. There are only two sppons so that could show that there were only two people there sharing there food. -PJ
This image is a picture of a white table against a wall. The table has a wine glass on it that is just barely on the edge of it. There is a little bit of wine left in it, and there are beads on the white tablecloth. The shadow of the sunlight shining on the table is reflected off the white walls. There is a green shadow on the right corner of the picture. The tablecloth looks to be wrinkled on the skirt of it. This picture means that in the American lifestyle even though we have meals made for us we very rarely sit down for a meal. -Larsen
To me this picture shows a of memories that have happened in this certain place. It seems like it was a table cloth used a lot when kids were younger but now that the kids have gone to college the table cloth is put in a room that is never used anymore. Kind of to preserve the memories. This picture tells many stories form the spills on the to the used ice cream cup. Now looking at this again it seems like a birthday for a little kid but shortly the kid die and the moth wanted to replay the last moments with her child. -Cooper
The picture is so plain When i first looked at it. When i looked more into it i realized it told a story. Everything in the picture is white except the candy which makes it more noticable and the colors set a whole new mood. This makes you think what happened before the picture? what was on the table? how is the table a mess and the wall isnt? Laura Letinsky realized when she was talking to someone "something about making a picture versus taking a picture" is way different. -Gen
I like how laura letinsky looks upon art in a different stlye as many other of the artists out there, and how she says that she believe in what photography is, light exponsed onto a light sensitive object. I thought this was a cool way to look at photogaphy because it is just light on a light sensitive surface, and many people today make photography way to complicated. Also i like how she says that "You have to be aware of your tools and then use them to say something, because otherwise the work's just a bunch of noise." This comment explains alot of the photography out there today, how many people are thinking that complex photography is the best way to go, even when you done get what is happening in the photo. But the best photographs as mostly of simple things, and everyday objects that you would run into on your daily basis. I like how Laura views photography differently than all the other photographers at this time.
